Lyle Beerbohm Out; JZ Cavalcante Set to Fight Bobby Green at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson

A premier lightweight bout between Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante and Lyle Beerbohm has suffered a casualty for the Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson fight card in Chicago.

Beerbohm suffered a rib injury during training and had to pull out of the bout, which was slated to headline the non-Showtime portion of the fight card. New Strikeforce signee Bobby Green will step in to take his place.

Multiple MMAWeekly.com sources confirmed the injury and replacement, which was originally reported by MMAJunkie.com.

Green (15-4) is a King of the Cage champion that was originally expected to make his promotional debut against Milton Vieira at Strikeforce Challengers 18 on Aug. 12. He is 4-1 in his last five bouts, and receives a much bigger opportunity in stepping in to face a fighter with the name recognition of JZ Cavalcante.

Cavalcante (15-4-1) has run into bad luck like nobody’s business since coming razor close to being the No. 1 lightweight in the world just a few years back.

Injuries plagued the Brazilian for a time; then, after signing with Strikeforce, he came up short in his fight against former champion Josh Thomson last October. Most scored Cavalcante winning the fight, but the judges went the other way, giving Thomson the win.

Returning in June, Cavalcante faced Justin Wilcox in a pivotal lightweight match-up, but an accidental eye poke forced the fight to be stopped.

Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Dan Henderson squares off in a heavyweight non-title fight with Fedor Emelianenko in the main event at the Sears Center on July 30.
