Luke Harris Looks to Impress at MFC 34, Work His Way into a Title Shot

Things have seemingly come easy for MFC middleweight contender Luke Harris. In his nine wins, Harris has yet to go beyond the first round, submitting every opponent he’s defeated. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

“Things are falling in place,” Harris told MMAWeekly.com. “I always prepare for going the distance in the fight and I’m in good enough shape to push the pace hard the whole time, but I’ve been winning in the first round, so that’s great.”

While some may say Harris needs a war to truly see where he’s at, to him, a win’s a win regardless of how long it takes to achieve.

“I think however the fight goes, I’m ready for it,” said Harris. “This (upcoming) fight, this guy is undefeated, is in good shape and is real fit and stuff, so I’m definitely expecting a war.

“I was expecting a war in my last fight and the fight before that, so whichever way it goes, I’m prepared.”

The fight Harris speaks of is against undefeated Joseph Henle at MFC 34 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, on Friday night on AXS TV. It’s a fight that Harris thinks could be closer than some of his others, but ultimately expects to be able to dominate in.

“I think he’s a pretty well-rounded guy and match up well in every area,” said Harris of Henle. “He’s a pretty scrappy guy, a decent wrestler and a decent striker as well.

“That being said, I believe in my skills as well. My stand-up is ever improving, I’m good on the ground and I know I can push the pace in the fight.”

After defeating Edwin Dewees at MFC 33 in May, Harris could set himself up for a title shot should he defeat Henle at MFC 34, but he’s not letting that deter his focus.

“I think (a title shot is) a definite possibility,” said Harris. “(MFC president) Mark Pavelich has hinted at that, but I have a one-fight deal with the MFC, so we’ll see what happens.

“I don’t want to look past this opponent. My focus is really on this fight. I’ll think about that stuff afterwards, but I think it’s a definite possibility.”

At 34 years old, Harris on paper may not seem in the prime of his career, but according to him, he’s feeling better than ever and doesn’t feel that it’s a now or never situation when it comes to his career.

“The thing I find is that I keep getting in better shape and more well-rounded,” Harris said. “I started out off with a grappling background and have only been training striking the last five years, so I keep finding that I’m getting better and better, learning more about my body and getting stronger.

“So for right now, it’s hard to say (how much longer I’ll be fighting). Maybe I’ll hit a wall at some point and find that I’m feeling old, but I’m definitely not feeling like that yet, not at all.”
