Luiz Cane-Chris Camozzi, Gabriel Gonzaga-Geronimo ‘Mondragon’ Booked for UFC 153

Luiz Cane’s delayed middleweight debut will now take place at UFC 153, as “Banha” is slated to lock horns with Chris Camozzi on Oct. 13.

Promotion officials confirmed the booking Wednesday on the UFC’s Brazilian website. Additionally, Brazilian website Tatame.com reports that former heavyweight title contender Gabriel Gonzaga will take on Octagon newcomer Geronimo dos Santos at the event.

UFC 153 marks the Las Vegas-based promotion’s third trip to Rio de Janeiro in 14 months and will emanate from the HSBC Arena. The show is expected to air on pay-per-view and will see featherweight champion Jose Aldo defend his belt against surging challenger Erik Koch in the main event.

Cane, 31, was initially to make his debut at 185 pounds against former middleweight title challenger Yushin Okami at UFC 150, but Cane was forced to withdraw from the bout due to injury. The Brazilian now enters the cage having lost three of his last four fights at light heavyweight, most recently falling by knockout by unbeaten Bulgarian Stanislav Nedkov just under one year ago at UFC 134.

Camozzi has won back-to-back bouts heading into his showdown with Cane. The American has been perfect in 2012 thus far, first submitting Dustin Jacoby with a guillotine choke in January before badly lacerating Nick Catone last month at UFC on FX 4 en route to a third-round doctor's stoppage. The victory marks the fifth win by way of knockout for Camozzi, who also owns six career triumphs by submission.

A Rio native now fighting out of Ludlow, Mass., 33-year-old Gonzaga returned to the UFC in January to submit countryman Ednaldo Oliveira. The submission specialist holds an 8-5 record in the UFC, including a famous head kick knockout of Mirko Filipovic.

Known as “Geronimo Mondragon,” dos Santos enters the UFC having compiled more than 40 bouts in six years as a professional. The 31-year-old from Bahia, Brazil, currently rides a 10-fight winning streak.
