'Kid' Yamamoto out, Wilson Reis meets Ivan Menjivar at UFC 165 in Toronto

It didn’t take long for Wilson Reis to book his next fight after being scrapped from Wednesday’s card in Brazil.

With Norifumi Yamamoto (18-6 MMA, 0-3 UFC) out, Reis (16-4 MMA, 0-0 UFC) will step in later this month to meet Ivan Menjivar (25-10 MMA, 4-3 UFC) in a bantamweight bout at UFC 165. UFC officials announced the change on Tuesday afternoon.

UFC 165 takes place Sept. 21 at Air Canada Centre in Toronto. The main card airs on pay-per-view and features a light heavyweight title fight between champion Jon Jones and top contender Alexander Gustafsson. In the co-main event, interim bantamweight champion Renan Barao defends against Eddie Wineland. Prelims for the show air on FOX Sports 1 and Facebook.

Reis was planning on making his UFC debut this week against Hugo Viana at UFC Fight Night 28 in his native Brazil. But Viana had to pull out of the fight just days ago, and Reis was removed from the fight card. Now he’ll just have to wait another couple weeks for his promotional debut – and do it on another continent.

Reis has a four-fight win streak that includes three submissions. This past December, he submitted Owen Roddy at Cage Warriors 50. His resume includes a lengthy run with Bellator, where he 5-4 and competed in four separate featherweight tournaments.

Menjivar is looking to rebound from a first-round submission loss to Urijah Faber at UFC 157. But he has won four of his six UFC fights, including a pair of “Submission of the Night” bonuses for victories over John Albert and Azamat Gashimov. The native of El Salvador trains at Tristar Gym in Montreal,s o he’ll get an adopted home-country fight at UFC 165 in Toronto.

“Kid” Yamamoto was hoping to rebound from three straight losses and five defeats in his last six fights. He hasn’t fought since a February 2012 loss to Vaughan Lee at UFC 144 in his native Japan – the first time he was submitted in his 25-fight career.

With the change, the latest UFC 165 card includes:
