KOTC’s Victor Meza Now Considers Himself a True Champion Following Recent Win

Former Bellator fighter Victor Meza has hit his stride since leaving the promotion in 2009, having won five of six fights and claiming the King of the Cage lightweight championship in the process.

Most recently, Meza defended his KOTC title for the first time on Sept. 28 against former undefeated prospect Benny Madrid to solidify himself as champion.

“Every champion always says that you’re not a true champion until you defend your title,” said Meza. “The way I looked at it was it wasn’t truly mine or I truly deserved it until I defended it.

“When I was going into the fight, I didn’t look at myself as the champion, but I had to win it again to (justify) being the champion.”

While he was able to get the unanimous decision over Madrid, Meza admits the fight wasn’t his strongest showing.

“I came out with the W, which is what every fighter is looking for, but I’m not happy with the performance,” said Meza. “I feel I should have been able to close the fight in the later rounds.

“I was very cautious because I knew he was just trying to take me down and win rounds by taking me down and hold me down.”

Should he want to continue to be successful, Meza knows he has to diversify his game.

“I would say (I need to mix in) more wrestling when I do my striking,” he said. “To be honest with you, I like to strike, and if I hit somebody, I don’t look for the takedowns, I just look to stand up. I could mix it up more with my wrestling.”

Looking towards the future, Meza told MMAWeekly.com that he wants to continue to defend his title and then hopefully get another opportunity to prove himself on the biggest stages of MMA.

“Now I pretty much want to take fights and then take that next step,” he said. “I have the record (13-3) to fight in any organization, so now it’s just a waiting game. I’m just trying to win every fight I have on my contract and then take the next step.”
