Jon Jones Arrested for Probation Violation Following Drag Racing Charge

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was back in jail on Tuesday following a recent slew of traffic citations, which included an allegation of drag racing.

Jones was pulled over by Albuquerque, N.M. police late Thursday, March 24, and subsequently issued five citations. The citations included Unlawful Drag Racing and Other Competitive Racing, Unlawful Exhibition Driving, Unlawful Use of Modification of Exhaust System, Failure to Maintain Traffic Lane, and Improper Display of Registration Plate.

Not considered particularly heinous violations, Jones publicly revealed the citations on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour. Things took a turn for the worse when police bodycam video surfaced, which showed Jones in a verbal confrontation with the issuing officer. Jones argued his innocence, but got belligerent, calling the officer a “(expletive) liar.”

Jones is currently on probation stemming from a felony hit and run incident from April of 2015. He was also recently cited for driving without a license and no proof of insurance or registration, after being pulled over for driving 75 miles per hour in a 35-mile-per-hour zone. That’s where the recent traffic citations became a problem.

The citations were considered a probation violation by an Albuquerque judge, who issued a warrant for Jones’ arrest. Jones turned himself in to police at 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning, as first reported by TMZ and verified by MMAWeekly.com.

Jones remained in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center due to a probation violation as of the time of publication (midday) on Tuesday.

Although UFC officials are fully aware of the situation, they haven’t had time to determine how this might affect Jones’ planned challenge to current light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier at UFC 197 on April 23 in Las Vegas.

“UFC is aware that Jon Jones turned himself into the Albuquerque Police Department this morning for a potential probation violation stemming from a traffic stop last week,” UFC officials told MMAWeekly.com in a prepared statement. ”

“UFC has been in touch with Jones’ legal team and will have no further comment until the organization has had appropriate time to gather necessary information.”

Jones is currently scheduled for a Traffic Arraignment Hearing at the Albuquerque Municipal Court on April 5.
