Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs. Claudia Gadelha Joins Rousey vs. Holm; Is Tate vs. Nunes Next?

Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs. Claudia Gadelha Joins Rousey vs. Holm; Is Tate vs. Nunes Next?

Having done a 180-degree turn from his initial feelings on women in mixed martial arts, UFC president Dana White is now all-in.

Not only did the UFC commit to Ronda Rousey‘s star power, they’re going to lean heavily on their female athletes for the UFC 195 fight card that Rousey announced on Friday’s edition of Good Morning America.”

Rousey revealed that she would fight former world-champion boxer Holly Holm in the UFC 195 main event on Jan. 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Lance Pugmire of the L.A. Times, in a conversation with White, then reported that the brash UFC exec revealed that strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk would put her belt on the line against Claudia Gadelha in the night’s co-main event.

Gadelha earned a shot at Jedrzejczyk with her one-sided unanimous decision win over former World Series of Fighting women’s strawweight champion Jessica Aguilar at UFC 190. The bout with the champ is a rematch of their December 2014 bout, in which Gadelha lost a split decision.

She was medically suspended following the fight for six months, or until she had her hand cleared by a doctor. It turned out that the 26-year-old Brazilian partially tore a ligament in a finger, putting the rematch off until 2016.

It appears the finger is healing well, since the fight will now take place in the first couple days of the year.

In addition to revealing the Jedrzejczyk title defense against Gadelha, White also told Pugmire that he would like to put a fight between Miesha Tate and Amanda Nunes on the Jan. 2 card in Las Vegas. Tate is coming off of an impressive victory over Jessica Eye, while Nunes recently dispatched Sara McMann.

Tate was originally thought of as the next challenger to Rousey, but White said that quickly changed when UFC brass had formal discussions about whom Rousey should fight next.

“With Miesha, the result has been the same twice. Everyone’s already seen that fight,” White said.

“When you talk about the possibilities of what Holly can do… the Holly Holm fight for Ronda is way more intriguing.”
