James Brum says it's all or nothing vs. Pastor at Cage Warriors Fight Night 8

There’s an old sports adage about throwing records out the proverbial window, and Jack Brum subscribes to it.

Brum (11-2) on Saturday meets Olivier Pastor (17-13) in a bantamweight bout at Cage Warriors Fight Night 8, and he brings a five-fight win streak into the matchup – while Pastor has dropped three of his past four and six of his past nine.

But Brum said you can forget what you think you might know if you believe on paper that this will be a walk-through for him.

“People talk about his win-loss record and what does his record reflect about how good he is,” Brum told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). “But he doesn’t back down from a fight. He’ll take a fight on late notice. Several of the fights have been at featherweight. He’s a veteran of the sport, he’s a tough fighter, he never backs down, he comes forward constantly and he throws down almost to his detriment because he’ll eat a punch, happily, to dish one out.”

Cage Warriors Fight Night 8 takes place at Mirbeh Sports Hall in Al Fujairah, United Arab Emirates. Brum also pays attention to that classic MMA warning about fighting with lighter gloves, and even though he’s never been knocked out, he’s not exactly prepared to stand in front of Pastor to eat a bunch of punches and run the risk of finding out what it’s like to go to sleep from a punch.

“I’ve got to keep my head movement, I’ve got to stay light on my feet and I can’t stay in front of him,” Brum said. “I’ve got to stay busy and keep the work rate up like I usually do. I can’t mess around in there because at the end of the day, with four-ounce gloves, if you get clipped you’re going to sleep.”

Brum went 4-0 in 2012 as part of his five-fight streak – with all four wins coming for Cage Warriors. But all four were unanimous decisions – a contrast from the five-fight win streak he started his career with, which featured five stoppages.

Brum said he hasn’t had a change in philosophy. Rather, at the Cage Warriors level, the opposition is just tougher and getting finishes just isn’t as easy as it used to be.

“You get it a lot now with fighters padding out their records and fighting bums,” he said. “But when you get to the bigger shows, you’re soon going to get found out. And that’s something I’m not doing. That’s something Pastor’s not doing. And that’s something with Cage Warriors – you don’t get easy fights. At this level, the guys are hard to put away. It’s not to say I haven’t tried to finish the fights. I don’t go out there with the mindset of, ‘Let’s take it the distance.’

“But people forget two of those performances last year ended with a 30-25 decision. So they’re dominating performances, and I had a war with James Saville – so there are things people forget.”

Brum hasn’t been easy to put away, himself. His two career pro losses both are by submission – but both when he refused to tap out to chokes.

One of those losses came on short notice to current UFC standout Erik Perez. But the point seems to be if you want to beat Brum, there might be only one way to do it right now.

“I go out on my shield,” Brum said. “I never go out with a mindset of looking for an easy way out. … I’m not giving anyone an easy fight. When people look at me, they know they’re in for a hard night. They know they’ve either got to knock me out, which hasn’t been done, or they’ve got to put me to sleep.

“When I’m there, you’ve got to take everything away from me. It’s all or nothing.”
