Ireland vs. England: Cathal Pendred meets Tom Breese at UFC Fight Night 77 in Dublin

Cathal Pendred will try to get back on track in October in his home city, but he’ll have to do it against an unbeaten opponent.

Pendred (17-3-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) has been booked for a welterweight fight against Tom Breese (8-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 77 in Dublin this fall. The news first was reported by Simon Head of The Sun newspaper in London and subsequently confirmed by Pendred. The UFC has not yet made an official announcement.

UFC Fight Night 77 takes place Oct. 24 at 3Arena in Dublin. The entire card is expected to stream on UFC Fight Pass. The show will be headlined by a lightweight bout between Ireland native Joseph Duffy – the last man to beat Conor McGregor – and Dustin Poirier.

Pendred had his 12-fight unbeaten streak and perfect UFC record snapped a little more than three weeks ago by John Howard at UFC 189 in Las Vegas. He dropped a split-decision in a fight he took on short notice just a month after a decision win over Augusto Montano at UFC 188 in Mexico City.

The former Cage Warriors welterweight champion tried out for Season 19 of “The Ultimate Fighter” in August 2013 and was picked for the show. He lost to eventual middleweight winner Eddie Gordon in the semifinals, but earned a UFC deal anyway and started 4-0 in the promotion – including a “Fight of the Night” come-from-behind submission win over Mike King at UFC Fight Night 46 in Dublin in July 2014.

Breese, from England, trains at Tristar Gym in Montreal – like event headliner Duffy. After starting his pro career 7-0 with six choke submissions and a knockout, he signed with the UFC and made a quick first impression with a first-round TKO win over Luiz Dutra at UFC Fight Night 67 in May.
