Invicta FC 3 Gets Jessica Penne-Naho Sugiyama Title Bout, Shayna Baszler-Sarah D’Alelio Co-Main

Invicta Fighting Championships’ third event will be headlined by an atomweight title confrontation between Jessica Penne and Naho Sugiyama.

The contest helps comprise the event’s 13-fight bill, which also showcases a co-headlining bantamweight bout between Shayna Baszler and Sarah D’Alelio.

Invicta FC 3 takes place Oct. 6 at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kan., and will also see Barb Honchak, Tara LaRosa, Leslie Smith, Julia Budd and Michelle Waterson square off with Aisling Daly, Vanessa Porto, Cat Zingano, Elaina Maxwell and Lacey Schuckman, respectively. Sherdog.com confirmed the main card contests with a source close to the event on Tuesday morning.

Penne, 29, has lost just once as a professional, falling to eventual champion Zoila Gurgel in Bellator’s 115-pound tournament two years ago. Since the decision defeat, Penne has won back-to-back fights, topping Amy Davis to close out 2010 before spending 17 months on the sideline. The Californian returned to the cage for Invicta’s inaugural event this past April, earning a third-round technical knockout over Lisa Ellis.

Unbeaten in eight pro fights, Sugiyama, 34, became the Jewels 105-pound champion in December by defeating two opponents in a single night, topping Kikuyo Ishikawa and Misaki Takimoto at 17th Ring. Most recently, “Sugi Rock” took on Yasuko Tamada in a non-title rematch of their 2010 clash under the Valkyrie banner. Sugiyama once again emerged victorious, earning a majority decision over Tamada on May 26.
