The countdown clock is ticking away until UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre can finally return to full training, and then book his next title defense against Carlos Condit.
St-Pierre was in Atlanta last weekend to support a few of his teammates including Rory MacDonald and Mark Bocek, and took time to update everyone on his progression.
The UFC’s reigning welterweight king says he’s about 2 more months away from actual fight training. Currently, he’s still undergoing physical therapy to strengthen his surgically repaired knee.
While rumors have placed St-Pierre’s return bout against Condit at the UFC event scheduled for November in Montreal, the Canadian icon doesn’t care much when or where the fight happens as long as he’s ready.
Then he just wants to get back into the business of fighting. It’s something he’s missed dearly for the past several months.
“Wherever it is, England, United States, wherever, I’ll fight. I’m just going to be happy to be back and fight. When you get hurt for a long time you’re forced to get pulled away from training, and you’re forced to stop doing what you like to do everyday,” St-Pierre told MMAWeekly.com.
“It makes you see things in perspective and I just want to get back. Wherever the fight will be, I will be glad to fight, I’m very anxious to come back.”
St-Pierre will face Carlos Condit to unite the UFC welterweight titles and it will be his first bout since defeating Jake Shields at UFC 129 last April in Toronto.
Beyond his injury update, St-Pierre also spoke about the teammate aspect of facing Carlos Condit, who also trains under his long time friend and coach Greg Jackson.
Jackson has stated that he will corner neither St-Pierre or Condit, but the Canadian isn’t concerned about the loss of his coach because simply said his opponent won’t have that advantage either.
“I don’t lose anything (not having Greg Jackson in my camp) because he’s not going to be in Carlos Condit’s corner either,” St-Pierre stated.
St-Pierre spoke at length about his injury and his long term goals of getting back to fighting in this exclusive interview below:
