Former WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner has been released from the promotion following his loss to Shane Roller at WEC 53 earlier this month in his home state of Arizona.

The news was confirmed by Varner’s management group at KO Reps and first reported by PunchDrunkGamer.com.

The former champion went on a tough run of late going 0-3-1 in his last four fights. Varner suffered from extremely controversial judging in his draw with Kamal Shalorus earlier this year, and then lost back to back fights to rival Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and then to Roller.

“I am ready for 2011, there will be some changes in my game,” Varner said on Tuesday. “It has been a nice ride with the WEC but its time for a change. Perhaps UFC will be in my future down the road.”

The Arizona native had changed up some things in his camp recently, beginning to work part time with American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose before his last fight in the WEC.

Over his career with the promotion including two previous fights with the UFC, Varner went 5-4-1, with a WEC lightweight title run as well.

Varner is the latest fighter to be released following a loss in his last fight. MMAWeekly.com revealed last week that both Dustin Hazelett and Pat Audinwood had been released from the promotion as well.
