Former WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner has become a busy man all of a sudden with a pair of headlining bouts on tap.
Varner steps into the cage with Alonzo Martinez at Titan Fighting Championship 20. They headline the event on Sept. 23 at The Historic Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kan.
Then, a month later, Varner steps back in the cage, pending his health from the Titan fight, to face Nate Jolly in the XFC 14 main event on Oct. 21. XFC 14 is slated for UCF Arena in Orlando, Fla.
Both fight cards are scheduled to air live as part of HDNet’s Friday night fight coverage.
Zuffa released Varner (17-5-1) following the WEC’s final event in December. He has since relocated from Arizona to the East Coast to train at AMA Fight Club alongside the likes of Jim and Dan Miller, Charlie Brenneman, and numerous other top tier fighters.
After going 0-3-1 in his final four WEC bouts, Varner bounced back at XFO 39 in May. He defeated Tyler Combs in just over three minutes in a welterweight bout.
At Titan Fighting Championship 20, Varner faces tough Midwest veteran Alonzo Martinez (31-14-1). Martinez has a wealth of experience under his belt, and has won nine of his last 10 bouts, including a recent four-fight streak.
Nate Jolly (10-3) doesn’t have the experience of Martinez, but he’s another tough Midwesterner that will attempt to be more than a bump in the road of Varner’s comeback trail.
