For better or worse, spiky-headed Sam Alvey doesn't back out of a bet

Sam Alvey was already dealing with a broken jaw, so this might be adding insult to literal injury.

The fan-favorite middleweight, who chose the nickname “Smile’n” for obvious reasons, recently posted a photo following a lost bet. Alvey (26-7 MMA, 3-2) owed a debt to UFC prospect Sage Northcutt, and the results are pretty suave (via Twitter):

So how did Alvey end up with a Northcutt-like hairdo? He and Northcutt apparently had a bet on December’s UFC 194 headliner, in which Conor McGregor (19-2 MMA, 7-0 UFC) scored a 13-second knockout of longtime champ Jose Aldo (25-2 MMA, 7-1 UFC) to claim the featherweight belt. Guess which fighter Alvey bet on (via Twitter).

The day, though, did come with some good news for Alvey: He said he got to remove his braces, which were affixed after he suffered a broken jaw during a December training session.

Alves was riding a three-fight winning streak – all via knockout – before an August loss to Derek Brunson. He was then slated to fight Daniel Sarafian later this month at UFC Fight Night 83 before the jaw injury put him on the sidelines.
