For Legacy’s Kevin Aguilar, It’s All About the Victory; The Title is Just a Bonus

Coming off the only loss of his career, to Leonard Garcia in late 2013, Legacy FC featherweight Kevin Aguilar took nearly two years off from the sport before returning to action in early 2015.

Against Alex Black in February and David Bosnick in December, Aguilar rebounded off his loss to Garcia and picked up back-to-back wins to get his career back on track.

“After that little layoff I had, coming into top competitors like Alex and David, it felt really good to get those wins under my belt, especially after a loss,” Aguilar told MMAWeekly.com. “It took me a little bit to shake (ring rust) off. But once I got back acclimated to the ring, I performed as usual and up to expectations.

“I performed at a perfect level against David. I didn’t get tired and I did everything I wanted to do. Alex was a little bit different story. I got caught and almost lost the fight, but I came back strong and finished him in the third.”

After losing out on a title with his defeat at the hands of Garcia, Aguilar (10-1) will once again get to challenge for a title when he takes on Tony Kelley (3-0) the 145-pound main event of Legacy FC 57 on Friday in Shreveport, La.

“Tony Kelley thinks I’ve been ducking and dodging him, but honestly I hadn’t heard about this kid, ever,” said Aguilar. “I hear that he was on this MTV show, and I never saw it or went to see it. Come fight night, he’ll know that I haven’t been ducking and dodging him.

“He’s going to try to keep it standing, and I’m going to beat him at the stand-up, where he’s most comfortable at, or on the ground if he decides to go there. But I’m going to dictate the fight. His gas tank is in question. Nobody’s got a gas tank like me. I’ll fight all five rounds just like the first.”

While winning a title would be a big step for Aguilar’s career, he’s looking forward to just picking up a win on July 1 and moving on to the next opportunity that comes his way.

“People make it a big deal, but in my mind, it’s just another fight, and it’s just a trophy you get at the end of the fight this time,” he said. “For me it’s about the fight and the victory at the end.

“For me, really, it’s just fight-by-fight. Whoever or wherever I end up is where I’ll be. I love fighting for Legacy. It’s great that they keep me on, and I’ll keep performing for them.”
