Episode No. 5 recap: 'The Ultimate Fighter: Team Rousey vs. Team Tate'

the-ultimate-fighter-18-cast-1.jpgEpisode No. 5 of “The Ultimate Fighter: Team Rousey vs. Team Tate” opens with Roxanne Modafferi and Jessica Rakoczy sharing a moment at the house following their fight. Modafferi is upset over her defeat, but admits if she had to lose to anyone in the house, she’s glad it was Rakoczy.

Team Rousey’s David Grant and Team Tate’s Louis Fisette, who face each other in the second men’s quarterfinal bout later in the episode, both relax in their shared bedroom where they discuss their fight and the fact there is no ill will between them.

Raquel Pennington talks about the difficulties involved with being an openly gay athlete and how some of her family members did not show her support when she first came out as a lesbian.

At a Team Rousey training session, Grant prepares for his fight and coach Ronda Rousey compliments the well-rounded skillset of the British fighter.

Later on, Fisette gets ready at a Team Tate training session and emphasizes the importance of making the most of his second chance after being brought back into the competition as an injury replacement for Tim Gorman.

Rousey’s mother, former judo world champion Ann Maria DeMars, makes a guest appearance at Team Rousey’s next training session, where she focuses on helping the fighters with mental preparation and refined training tactics.

Fight time is nearly here. Grant and Fisette weigh in and tip the scale under the 136-pound limit, making their bantamweight quarterfinal contest official.

TEAM ROUSEY’S DAVID GRANT (8-1) VS. TEAM TATE’S LOUIS FISETTE (6-1)

Round 1 – Both fighters are loose with their strikes early and Grant lands a hard leg kick. Grant backs Fisette against the cage with a flurry of strikes and comes up the middle with a hard knee to the body. Fisette throws back but is pinned against the cage as Grant works for a takedown. Fisette reverses the position, but Grant quickly gets it back. Grant gets a hold of one leg and Fisette throws and off balance knee that leads to a takedown. Grant throws punches from Fisette’s guard as the Canadian defends and looks for an opening to secure a submission. Grant advances to side control and in a scramble goes for an armbar. Fisette briefly gets on top but is reversed and once again ends up on his back. Grant closes the round with a relentless onslaught of punches and elbows that cut Fisette open and nearly forces referee Kim Winslow to stop the fight.

Round 2 – Fisette is unsuccessful with a double-leg takedown attempt but manages to press Grant against the cage. Grant catches Fisette out of position and, with his own back against the cage, scores a takedown into side control. Grant takes the back and locks in a tight rear-naked choke. Fisette taps out and the fight is over.

David Grant def. Louis Fisette via submission (rear-naked choke) – Round 2

Grant registers a second consecutive victory for Team Rousey and the competition is tied at two wins for each team half way through the quarterfinal round.

Team Rousey maintains control of fight selection and with the women up next; coach Rousey selects her No. 2 pick Jessamyn Duke to go up against Team Rousey’s No. 3 pick Raquel Pennington.
