For Singapore-based lightweight Eddie “The Magician” Ng, 2013 was another year in which he proved to be one of the top prospects in the world.
Back-to-back armbar submission wins, highlighted by his most recent against Peter Davis on Oct. 11, has Ng on a five-fight winning streak with an overall record of 7-1.
“I am definitely happy with my performance,” said Ng of his win over Davis. “I wanted to get a finish and I got it, so there is not much more that I can ask for.
“Peter is one of the toughest opponents I have ever faced, but I knew that when I was at the bottom, I needed to stay calm and I jumped on the opening when it emerged.”
Ng gives credit to his success to working with Evolve MMA, one of the sport’s premier international teams.
“I feel like I am constantly learning and improving, especially with the help of all the other world champions at Evolve MMA,” said Ng. “I mean, with the largest collection of world champions, the only direction that the Evolve Fight Team and myself are going is up.
“MMA is such a complex sport and there is so much to learn, I just need to continue improving myself in training and it will only translate in the One FC cage.”
With Evolve teammate, and One FC lightweight champion, Shinya Aoki moving down to featherweight, we asked Ng if there is a possibility he could go after the title should his teammate decide to vacate it.
“Shinya is a teammate and a close friend, if he chooses to defend his lightweight world championship title, I will respect his wishes as the title remains within the Evolve family,” said Ng. “If he chooses to move to featherweight (full time), I will love a title opportunity!”
After a big year for himself and his teammates, Ng told MMAWeekly.com that he is looking forward to an even better year in 2014 as he takes his career to new heights.
“I just want to stay healthy and compete as often as I can,” he said. “And if One FC gives me a lightweight title shot, I will be delighted, as long as it is not against Shinya.
“Thanks for the constant support. One FC will be in Kuala Lumpur and Manila in November and December, so tune in to catch the best mixed martial artists in Asia – including my teammates from the Evolve Fight Team – as One FC closes out 2013 with a bang.”
