Eddie Ng Expects Exciting Fight Against Honorio Banario at ONE: Heroes of the World

Styles make fights and Eddie Ng believes his next bout will be a memorable one. He’s taking on Honorio Banario at ONE: Heroes of the World and the lightweight thinks it’s a match-up which will bring the fans to their feet.

“It’s a fight that people can get excited about because of the way we fight. It’s a collision course, like two trains that are heading towards each other.  Both of us are always chasing the finish (and) I don’t think me and Banario will ever take a step back until one of us gets our hand raised.”

Ng was touted as a possible title contender after winning his first four fights for the promotion. He’s currently coming off back to back losses, but the Hong Kong native says he’s always had a tendency to be self critical regardless of results.

“I set the bar very high for myself, probably a bit too hard on myself at times. Every fight that I’ve had, I’m never fully happy with it. I always think there’s something better that I could have done. Why did I do this when I could have done that? That was a mistake. And it doesn’t matter if it was a win or loss. Where are the areas of improvement?”

Although Ng was born in England, his parents are both from Hong Kong, which is only separated from Macau by a few miles of water. Several members of his family will be making the short ferry trip to come and watch him fight at the Cotai Arena and it’s something the 30-year-old is very aware of.

Eddie Ng for MMAWeekly“Macau is very close to Hong Kong and I have a lot of family that are coming to watch for the first time. It’s quite a big thing for me because not a lot of my family have watched me live. To have their support and presence inside the arena is going to be something I haven’t experienced and a moment that I think I will always treasure once my career is done.”

Ng has been fighting out of Evolve MMA in Singapore since 2011. He trains alongside legendary lightweights like Rafael dos Anjos and Shinya Aoki and is constantly looking to learn new tricks and techniques.

“I believe in my coaches and I believe in my training process. I have so much to learn in striking, wrestling, jiu-jitsu and putting everything together. I keep a white belt mentality and I’m ready to soak up any knowledge I get from our coaches.”

Ng has wins by both submission and TKO and is regarded as being a well rounded fighter. He believes Banario’s biggest strength is his striking, but thinks he has more ways to win.

“He comes from a Wushu background and I think his striking skills are very good. Fights start standing, so that’s something I have to look out for, but if you watch my previous fights, you’re going to have to be prepared for someone who is willing to strike, wrestle, and grapple.”

Banario was the inaugural ONE Championship featherweight champion, while Ng has been one of the organization’s leading lightweights since its inception in 2011. It’s a vitally important fight for both men and the Hong Kong native is hoping to have his arm raised at the end.
