Danny Castillo-Tony Ferguson, Derek Brunson-Lorenz Larkin moved to UFC 177

Instead of fighting 400 miles south on I-5, Danny Castillo gets to stay at home.

Castillo (17-6 MMA, 7-3 UFC), a Team Alpha Male fighter, will be part of UFC 177 now that his lightweight fight against Tony Ferguson (15-3 MMA, 5-1 UFC) needed a new home following the cancellation of UFC 176. Additionally, the UFC 176 fight between Derek Brunson (11-3 MMA, 2-1 UFC) and Lorenz Larkin (14-3 MMA, 1-3 UFC) will be part of the card in Sacramento, as well.

UFC officials announced the new date and location for the two fights at UFC.com.

UFC 177 takes place Aug. 30 at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento, Calif., where Castillo trains. The main card will air on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass. The main event features another Team Alpha Male standout in T.J. Dillashaw, who defends his new bantamweight title for the first time against the man he upset to win it, Renan Barao.

UFC 176 had been set for Aug. 2 at Staples Center in Los Angeles until the promotion pulled the plug on the pay-per-view on Tuesday night, about a week after featherweight champion Jose Aldo was forced out of his main event rematch against Chad Mendes.

Castillo last was seen delivering a highlight-reel knockout against Charlie Brenneman at UFC 172 in April. The victory marked Castillo’s sixth win in his past eight appearances and was his first knockout since 2011.

The San Francisco native will be looking for his first win in Sacramento since the second fight of his pro career back in 2007. In his first fight in the WEC, he was submitted by Donald Cerrone in 90 seconds at WEC 34 in “Sac-town.” And in December, he dropped a majority decision to Edson Barboza at UFC on FOX 9 in front of his home crowd.

Ferguson is also coming off a knockout win, as he finished Katsunori Kikuno in the first round at May’s UFC 173 event. The 30-year-old is 2-0 since returning from a 17-month layoff due to injury. His submission of Mike Rio at UFC 166 earned him “Submission of the Night” honors and marked his 13th finish out of 15 overall victories.

Brunson makes his return after a encouraging effort against standout Yoel Romero suddenly went south at UFC Fight Night 35 in January. In a stunning reversal, Romero caught the 30-year-old NCAA Division II All-American wrestler with a flurry of punches and earned a TKO to evade what likely would have been a decision loss.

Afterward, Brunson said his performance was severely affected by a problem rehydrating after his weight cut. The loss snapped a two-fight winning streak for the former Strikeforce fighter, who beat Chris Leben and Brian Houston in his first octagon performances.

Larkin, meanwhile, is badly in need of a UFC win after a knockout loss to Constantinos Philippou at UFC Fight Night 40, which marked his third loss in four octagon outings. A standout muay Thai striker, the 27-year-old graduated from the now-defunct Strikeforce with a 4-1 record, but he’s struggled to find his footing in the cage as of late.

The latest UFC 177 card now includes:

  • T.J. Dillashaw vs. Renan Barao
  • Danny Castillo vs. Tony Ferguson
  • Derek Brunson vs. Lorenz Larkin
  • Shayna Baszler vs. Bethe Correia
