Every now and again, the often-brutal sport of MMA provides a feel-good moment. The latest came from this past weekend’s UFC 173 event, where an ankle injury doomed Jamie Varner.
In his latest video blog, which was released ahead of Saturday’s doubleheader with UFC Fight Night 41 in Berlin and the TUF Brazil 3 Finale in Sao Paulo, UFC President Dana White talks up this weekend’s dual-event day and also takes us behind the scenes of UFC 173, which took place May 24 in Las Vegas.
The behind-the-scenes footage has your typical fight-night theatrics, including the immediate reaction to T.J. Dillashaw’s championship upset of the long-dominant Renan Barao. However, some of the best footage comes from the event’s first pay-per-view main-card bout.
In it, former WEC champ Varner suffered an early ankle injury and could barely stand, but he fought through the pain and miraculously survived the round (only to have a cageside physician accidentally step on his foot). Check out the above footage to see how it all unfolds, including opponent James Krause (21-5 MMA, 2-1 UFC) backstage with Varner (21-10-1 MMA, 3-5 UFC) and the fans’ classy reaction as the fighter hobbled off the arena floor.
