Dana White got Tyron Woodley's belt to put around Conor McGregor's waist after UFC 205 win

NEW YORK – As it turns out, the second UFC belt given to Conor McGregor wasn’t his featherweight title.

In fact, it was Tyron Woodley’s welterweight strap, which had just been borrowed by UFC President Dana White after McGregor threw a tantrum in the octagon.

“Just for the record, I’m not supposed to bring his belt – he’s supposed to bring his belt,” White declared at UFC 205’s post-fight news conference. “He’s yelling at me because I don’t have his belt. I’m like, ‘No, you’re supposed to bring your belt.’ I give you the new belt.”

McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC), of course, got a new lightweight belt after knocking out Eddie Alvarez (28-5 MMA, 3-2 UFC) in the headliner of Saturday’s pay-per-view at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The win made him the first fighter in UFC history to hold belts in two divisions. But his immediate demand was for the UFC to “spit-shine” his featherweight title and bring it to him in the cage.

Apparently, it was nowhere to be found, which is why White found himself asking Woodley for a loaner.

“He got it back,” White said. “He let us borrow his belt.”

A stone-faced Woodley (16-3-1 MMA, 6-2-1 UFC), who earlier in the night fought Stephen Thompson (13-1-1 MMA, 8-1-1 UFC) to a majority draw, seemed none too amused about the request. Considering that just one day earlier the two had nearly gotten into an extracurricular fight, it wasn’t hard to see why.

After a run-in at UFC 205’s official weigh-ins, Woodley and McGregor sparred on Twitter, and McGregor went after the welterweight champ at the event’s ceremonial weigh-ins, forcing security to restrain him.

Maybe that’s why, when asked by MMAjunkie to confirm White’s account, Woodley huffed “exactly – just like that.”

“I’m a professional at the end of the day,” he managed when asked about the act of letting go of the strap for someone who’d mistreated him. “To be honest, if you want to get to me, you can get to me.”

For McGregor, the situation was just a chance to get in another shot at the latest rival in his sights. The two-division champ already has made two incursions into the welterweight division, splitting a pair of bouts with Nate Diaz.

“Maybe that’s a sign of things to come,” he said when asked about his loaner.

For what it’s worth, though, the welterweight champ seems game to give McGregor at taking the belt for real.

“I don’t know if Mr. McGregor wants to go for a third belt,” Woodley said. “It looked like was talking a little noise in the back, so we’ll see what happens.”
