Clay Guida vs. Bobby Green Joins Already Loaded UFC 225 Fight Card for Chicago

As if the UFC 225: Whittaker vs. Romero 2 fight card wasn’t already stacked, UFC officials added a blistering lightweight bout between Clay Guida and Bobby Green to the Chicago event on Tuesday. The Chicago Tribune first reported the fight.

Guida (34-17) gave his career a much needed recharge over the past year. After having floundered at featherweight for about four years, amassing a 3-4 record at 145 pounds, Guida returned to lightweight last year. He defeated Erik Koch early last summer and then took out Joe Lauzon in November.

Guida had been a perennial contender at lightweight before he experimented at featherweight, but couldn’t quite recapture that success in the lighter weight class. Now that he’s back at 155 pounds and won his first two fights upon returning, a victory over the likes of Green would put him back on the march to lightweight title contention.

Green (24-8-1) made his way to the Octagon after Zuffa purchased Strikeforce, dissolved the company, and merged many of the promotions top tier fighters into the UFC. He started strong, winning his first four UFC bouts before going on a three-fight losing skid.

Green didn’t get the victory, but drew with Landon Vannata at UFC 216 late last year, for which the two earned Fight of the Night honors. He also fought and defeated Koch in January of this year, which set him up for the fight with Guida.

Green had been rocketing up the lightweight ranks before that three-fight losing streak threw up a roadblock. If he could add Guida’s name in the win column after Koch’s, Green would take a leap up the ladder in the UFC lightweight division.

The UFC 225 fight card is already stacked, starting with what promises to be a top heavy main card. UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker heads the bill, putting his belt on the line for the first time in a rematch with Yoel Romero. With no drop-off in the UFC 225 co-main event, former lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos meets polarizing figure Colby Covington in a battle for the interim UFC welterweight title.

The card also features Andrei Arlovski vs. Tai Tuivasa, Holly Holm vs. Megan Anderson, Alistair Overeem vs. Curtis Blaydes, and several other promising showdowns. Keep tabs on the UFC 225: Whittaker vs. Romero 2 fight card on MMAWeekly.com’s Event Page.
