Chico Camus on RFA 40 Main Event: ‘I’ve Just Got to be Me’ Against Czar Sklavos

After a stretch in which he lost four of seven UFC bouts (with one no contest), flyweight veteran Chico Camus was eager to get back on the winning track when he stepped in as a late replacement to fight Matt Brown at RFA 36 in March.

Over the course of three rounds, Camus was able to control the majority of the action and pick up unanimous decision over Brown, marking his first victory since his UFC release last year.

“I thought I did well,” Camus told MMAWeekly.com. “I was feeling really good. I know when I’ve got a good bounce to my step.

“I dominated all three rounds, except for the time I got caught at the end of the third round. It was more of a flash knockdown, but he did catch me with a decent shot. I thought I fought a clean fight. I could have done better in some areas, but I got the win and I think that’s all that matters.”

For Camus it was imperative for him to pick up a win to stay at the national level.

“That definitely was big coming off the losses and the cut from the UFC, it was big to get back in there and showcase my skills,” said Camus. “I think I still haven’t shown my best work. I’m excited for somebody to bring that out of me.

“I still have a long way to go, I believe. My career to me is just getting started. From the cut of the UFC, to the RFA picking me up, I’m happy to be fighting under their banner. I’m excited to keep the ball rolling.”

Camus (15-7) will look to pick up his second straight win against the fighter he replaced against Brown in February, Czar Sklavos (12-4) in the main event of RFA 40 on July 15 in Prior Lake, Minnesota.

“I’ve just got to go out there and be me, kind of like I did in the last fight,” Camus said. “I already know what I have to do to go out there and win fights. I’ve been there and have fought top-level guys. (Sklavos is) just another guy in the way. I’m excited to go out there and showcase my skills.”

Having fought nearly every three months this year, Camus is looking to close out 2016 being as busy as possible and take whatever fights are made available to him.

“It looks like I will get three (fights) in, but I’d like to get four,” said Camus. “I’ll accept a fight at 135lbs if it’s the right fight and right situation as well. The cut to 125-pounds is pretty brutal, and I feel I do well at 135-pounds too, so just to get the ball rolling again.

“If I finish this fight and come out and dominate this kid and come out healthy, then I’d love to fight again. Give me another month and a half, two months, and I’ll be right back in there. Getting in four fights this year would be really good for me.”
