Champs Conor McGregor, Tyron Woodley clash on Twitter following UFC 205 weigh-ins incident

NEW YORK – Conor McGregor and Tyron Woodley aren’t fighting Saturday at UFC 205. However, that didn’t stop the two UFC champions from clashing on social media following today’s UFC 205 weigh-ins in New York.

McGregor (20-3 MMA, 8-1 UFC), the UFC featherweight champ, challenges Eddie Alvarez (28-4 MMA, 3-1 UFC) for the lightweight belt in the UFC 205 main event; Woodley (16-3 MMA, 6-2 UFC) puts his welterweight strap up for grabs against Stephen Thompson (13-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) in the event co-headliner. Both men weighed in for their contests within close proximity to each other, and afterward they had a brief confrontation at the rehydration station.

The tension spilled over to Twitter once the weigh-ins had wrapped up. Woodley said he wasn’t interested in any sort of blowup with “The Notorious,” but in typical McGregor fashion, he gave a sharp one-line response that baited Woodley into further engagement ahead of their pay-per-view main card bout at Madison Square Garden in New York.

After Woodley was challenged, the reigning 170-pound champ sent a warning to McGregor. It’s clear by this point that McGregor doesn’t back down from anyone in a war of words – be it in person or online – and quickly fired back.

The ball then went back to Woodley’s court, and “The Chosen One” got the final word (for now). He reminded McGregor that he wasn’t as vocal when they came face-to-face, and reminded the brash Irishman that he also had little to say at this week’s UFC 205 pre-fight news conference.

Woodley then turned his focus back to UFC 205, because he has a difficult fight on his hands against Thompson and is eager to notch his first title defense. McGregor has a historic task ahead, as well, because beating Alvarez would make him the first simultaneous two-division champion in UFC history.

McGregor has said in the past that he would like to be a three-division champion, but Woodley implored to keep out of his lane and worry about his current matchup.
