Former heavyweight champs will clash for a second time at UFC 207.
The UFC today announced the rematch between Cain Velasquez (14-2 MMA, 12-2 UFC) and Fabricio Werdum (21-6-1 MMA, 9-3 UFC), respectively No. 2 and No. 3 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA heavyweight rankings, for the event, which takes place Dec. 30 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.
Werdum and Velasquez previously were set for an immediate rematch at UFC 196 in February, but the injury bug once again bit Velasquez, and he was forced to withdraw. One day later, Werdumwithdrew citing an injury, and the entire fight card was downgraded to a FS1-televised event, UFC Fight Night 82. (UFC 196 was pushed to March and wound up hosting the first blockbuster fight between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz.)
Werdum is coming off a win over Travis Browne in the co-main event of UFC 203. He won the heavyweight title with a third-round submission of Velasquez at UFC 188. The shockingly dominant performance extended his winning streak to six. However, he next ran into Stipe Miocic, who knocked him out in less than three minutes at UFC 198 to capture the title.
Velasquez last fought at UFC 200, scoring a first-round TKO of Browne in his return fight after losing the belt to Werdum. The rematch will be only his third fight since October 2013.view original article >>
