Bellator 93 live results

dave-jansen-3.jpgIt took six months longer than expected, but Dave Jansen (19-2 MMA, 6-0 BFC) is now Bellator MMA’s Season 7 lightweight tournament winner.

Jansen overcame a disappointing opening round and earned the final two frames of his bout with Marcin Held (15-3 MMA, 4-2 BFC) to claim the rescheduled tourney final.

The contest served as the main event of Thursday’s “Bellator 93: Jansen vs. Held” event, which took place at Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine. The night’s main card aired on Spike TV.

While praised as a grappling specialist, Held looked impressive in the early going while standing in the pocket and trading shots with Jansen. Flashing improved technique and a willingness to slug it out, Held reddened Jansen’s face in an opening frame that was contested entirely on the feet.

Held earned a quick takedown to open the second frame before spinning and attacking Jansen’s left leg. Held wasn’t able to finish the move, and Jansen’s smooth defense saw him counter with ground-and-pound blows before pulling his leg free and sliding directly into mount. Held wiggled into safety and again looked for a submission attempt from the bottom, but Jansen shucked off the maneuvers and pummeled away with punches and elbows from the top.

With the fight hanging in the balance in the third, Jansen appeared to have more gas in the tank, and he stayed busy on the feet by moving in and out of range and peppering his opponent with power punches. Held dove in on a takedown 90 seconds into the frame, but he couldn’t keep Jansen on the floor.

On the restart, Jansen scored his own takedown, where Held again looked to attack limbs from the bottom. However, Jansen was up to the challenge and finished the round on top, and he was awarded a unanimous-decision win for his efforts.

Jansen now faces Bellator lightwieght champion Michael Chandler later this year.

Martinez stuns Wiuff, Davis vs. Spiritwolf ends in no contest

Ryan Martinez (9-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) came into his heavyweight matchup with longtime veteran Travis Wiuff (68-17 MMA, 4-2 UFC) with 74 less career fights than his opponent. It hardly mattered.

After a brief feeling-out process, Martinez rushed forward with heavy strikes. Three punches landed flush to the chin, and Wiuff crumpled to the floor. Martinez followed quickly to the canvas and sealed the deal with a few big ground-and-pound blows just 18 seconds into the opening round.

A much-hyped fight between noted scrappers Marcus Davis (21-9 MMA, 0-0 BFC) and Waachiim Spiritwolf (9-11-1 MMA, 1-2 UFC) ended in disappointing fashion as an inadvertent low blow resulted in a no-contest result.

Davis took the center of the cage in the early going as the two stood at distance and looked to measure the range. As the two patiently exchanged shots, Spiritwolf elected to drive in on a takedown that wouldn’t come, and the pair returned to the standup department.

Spiritwolf then scored a flash knockdown with a straight, and as Davis returned to his feet, he drove a knee into his opponent’s groin. Spiritwolf spent the entirety of his five-minute delay on the canvas and ultimately decided he couldn’t continue, much to the dismay of the pro-Davis crowd, who immediately began to shout obscenities. With the referee declaring the foul unintentional, the bout was rules a no contest.
