Sherdog.com has confirmed with a source close to the fighters that the matchup has been canceled as a result of Santos’ failure to make weight. The Brazilian officially weighed in at 277.8 pounds, while Prindle checked in at 265.2 pounds.
Slated to take place Friday at the Laredo Energy Center in Laredo, Texas, the twice-delayed matchup would have crowned a Season 5 heavyweight tournament winner and determined heavyweight champion Cole Konrad’s next challenger. It is unknown at this time if the bout will be rescheduled.
Santos and Prindle first squared off at Bellator 59 on Nov. 26, with the bout ending in a no-contest after “Big Monster” landed a kick to Prindle’s groin. The big men were supposed to rematch last week at Bellator 61, but the fight was postponed the day before weigh-ins after Prindle developed flu-like symptoms and was deemed unable to compete.
Bellator 62 will feature the opening round of the promotion’s Season 6 lightweight tournament. Heavy-handed Brazilian Patricky “Pitbull” Freire hit his contracted mark ahead of his clash with Lloyd Woodard (154.8), coming in at 155.6 pounds.
Meanwhile, lightweight debutant and Rick Hawn (155.6) sufficiently slimmed down prior to his encounter with Ricardo Tirloni (155.2). Brazilian Thiago Michel Pereira Silva was also cleared, checking in at 154.8 pounds for his quarterfinal matchup with expat countryman Rene Nazare (155.8).
