HOUSTON – Melvin Guillard came out looking to sling leather with Derek Campos, and instead, he wound up discovering the limits of his chin.
A left hook rocked Guillard (35-16-2 MMA, 0-2 BMMA) before follow-ups from Campos (16-6 MMA, 5-3 BMMA) sent him toppling to the mat early in the second round.
The lightweight bout opened the Spike-broadcast main card from Toyota Center in Houston following preliminary bouts on MMAjunkie.
The bout was called off at the 0:32 mark of the second frame when Guillard went to the canvas, putting a big win on Campos’ resume after a pair of losses to ex-champ Michael Chandler and Brandon Girtz in his previous outings. Guillard remains winless since signing with Bellator and is 1-4 in his previous five outings.
The shots that felled Guillard weren’t the first ones that hurt him. The UFC vet came out swinging in the first and connected. But a clash of heads staggered him and opened up a takedown for Campos, who held the position and resisted Guillard’s counterattack after the two returned to their feet.
Guillard looked to get back in the pocket after the break. He was against the cage when Campos caught him flush, and while he was able to fire back, the end was inevitable.
