Anderson Silva's Fitness Coach Issues Update on Middleweight Champ’s Physical Condition

Last weekend, several X-Gym fighters were running in the sands of Barra da Tijuca beach, including UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

Silva, who has returned to training after dealing with lingering injuries, was photographed by a paparazzo, revealing that the middleweight champion was sporting a larger midsection than is typical for the pound-for-pound king. In an interview with Sherdog.com, Silva’s fitness coach, Rogério Camões, made a point of clarification regarding the fighter’s physique and conditioning:

"It's a training that we do once a week, outside the gym. It is for resistance,” Camões said. “The training was not specific to Anderson, because he is not yet in full physical form. He's coming back now; we're still [within] the activation period. We will only enter the specific period when [it is] eight weeks [out from his fight]. He is doing the training without the commitment to be at the peak of his physical form.”

Although “The Spider” has already begun to prepare for his long-anticipated rematch with Chael Sonnen at UFC 147 on June 23, the bout still sits outside of the aforementioned eight-week time frame. As such, Camões says that there is no rush for “The Spider” to get into top shape just yet.

"If Anderson was in top form [10 weeks before] the fight, something would be wrong,” said Camões. “He comes from a rest period; he was coming from injury. He is returning to training, and I guarantee that he'll be in full shape for this fight and flying as usual.”
