The invasion of Strikeforce fighters to the UFC has already begun and now a major light heavyweight fight has been scheduled as former champion Gegard Mousasi takes on Alexander Gustafsson at UFC on Fuel in Sweden.
UFC officials announced the new fight early on Saturday.
Gegard Mousasi comes to the UFC as one of the most highly touted prospects transitioning from Strikeforce. The former champion most recently dismantled Mike Kyle in Strikeforce’s final show, and now tries to prove he belongs among the best light heavyweights in the world when he fights in Sweden on April 6.
This will be a serious test for Mousasi as he looks to establish himself as a true force at 205lbs. While the former Strikeforce fighter does have several high profile wins when he was a middleweight, Mousasi has yet to face the same level of talent at light heavyweights so this will be a serious test as he moves to the UFC’s 205lb division.
Mousasi won’t be handed an easy fight for his first trip to the Octagon because waiting for him will be top light heavyweight contender Alexander Gustafsson, fresh off a dominant victory over former champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.
A native Swede, Gustafsson will go home in early April with two goals in mind – beat Gegard Mousasi and solidify his spot as the top dog in the division awaiting a shot at champion Jon Jones.
The two light heavyweights will face off in a five round battle headlining the UFC’s second trip to Sweden. Gustafsson also headlined the first card in Sweden in April 2012 when he defeated Thiago Silva by unanimous decision.
UFC on Fuel in Sweden will go down on Saturday, April 6 with tickets on sale on Saturday, Feb 9 with UFC Fight Club members having access to tickets as of Thursday, Feb 7.
