I have sung the anthem at a sports stadium before (live in front of 33000 people and more on cable TV) for a football game. May I say that it was the closest I have ever come to forgetting the words to my own national anthem.

The problem is that the anthem is a song that you sing your whole life WITH PEOPLE SINGING IT NEXT TO YOU. So you always have someone prompting the words for you and you never think about the words. When you get nervous, you think more - when you think more, you BLANK more. So a song that you think you know very well and you don't have to practise is often the one you forget in concert.

Don't be too hard on the guy, he's just an amateur - an amateur practises until they get it right, a professional practises until they can't get it wrong. He just BLANKED.

Any of you haters out there - try singing the anthem in his shoes (where everyone knows if you stuff up!) then I will respect your opinion. Until then, hate all you want, but you will only ever be an armchair expert.
