khat is not such a big deal. it's a stimulant high, not very fun imo... in fact, pretty boring. there are lots of plants throughout the world that have traditional uses but are villified. coca is a good example of a plant w/ good uses that has a bad rap. even stronger things like peyote, mushrooms, and ayahuasca have benefits when used correctly and in ritual context or w/ good intentions. drug use is different than drug abuse.
