You may know this by another name (X Pass, Saulo Pass) but this was originally taught to me under the Kick and Go name.The first thing that you need to do is recognize which grips your opponent has. In this video I show a popular Butterfly Guard Pass called The Steering Wheel Pass. This pass became popular about 6 or 7 years ago. I remember the first time I saw it and we drilled the hell out of it. It's very useful and I still use it today! This pass is fairly easy and doesn't have a lot of different steps. In this video I show a very simple and effective Seated Guard Pass for gi and no gi. This move is SUPER effective and one of the most underused moves in BJJ. It looks a lot like a leg drag, which is very popular right now, but has some added control because you are getting control of the hand as well. In this video I show a defense for when your opponent hooks your ankles and pushes you away with their hips. This is a very basic sweep and you will see it a lot as you progress through the ranks. The best part about this defense is it is simple and very few people have seen it. The driving force behind this move is a strong squeeze with the knees. This video shows one of my favorite and most popular passes. I learned this pass while training in Brazil and it came in hand against the Spider Guard players that play off of their shoulders to avoid the pass. There are a couple of different options but this one leads directly to the back. This is actually a very high percentage and looks really cool. In this video I show my number 1 Open Guard pass for both gi and no gi. There are two really important aspects to this move. 1. The Lemur Monkey and 2. distribution of your weight in the Motorcycle position. When attempting this move it is important to lead with your pelvis and control your opponents ankles. In this video I show a very simple yet very effective guard pass the Slam and Go. This plays as a variation of the Bull Fighter Pass. One of the most powerful things you can do while looking to pass the open guard is to control both pant legs and that is the bases for this pass. Take control of the pants on the inside of the of your opponents knees and step back. As you step back you need to slam your opponents legs to the floor and start to turn the corner. In this video I show a great Butterfly Guard Pass called the Yoke Pass. This works extremely well in both gi and no gi with absolutely no changes in the technique.As with many of my other Butterfly instructionals it's important to maintain good posture and squeeze with the knees. This specific technique is great for when you didn't get inside head control or your opponent decided to lay his/her head on your shoulder (which I find to be very common, specifically with the overhook sweep).The watch video >>
In this video I show the important concepts surrounding the Lapel Punch Pass.
If you watch the video you will notice that I do a couple of things differently. One of the things that I do differently involves staggering my hand grips with the lapels. This allows you to stuff the choking hand and have more success with the pass/submission.

In this video I show a very basic yet effective Butterfly Guard Pass, The Egg Cracker. I really love teaching this pass to beginners because it focuses on the spatial control and good base. The first thing that needs to be stressed in Butterfly Guard is creating distance between you and your opponent, dominating their legs by squeezing your knees and flattening out your opponent.
