In this video I show a unique choke from the Turtle position. I learned this choke in Brazil from one of the head instructors at Gordo's academy (his name is Rommel, thus the choke being called the Rommel Choke). I really like this choke because it has an easy setup from behind the armpit. Very often when you try to insert the hand in front of the shoulder to get a Clock Choke, or any variant, people fight like crazy to stop that grip. When you lead behind the shoulder I find that people are much more likely to let it happen. Once you've placed that setup hand in it's time to place the finish hand. If you get a deep grip with the setup hand then the collar will be tight against the neck and can really prevent you from putting your fingers in the collar. Make sure to reference the video and see how I make space for that second hand, it's a sure way to get your 4 fingers in the collar. Now that we have our grips it's time to proceed with driving my elbow into the chest. I do no watch video >>

It's often said that the jab is the most important punch in boxing but it's incredibly terrifying to throw this punch when your opponent could counter you with a huge right hand or big hook. But then how are you going to setup your own big punches when you're too scared to throw the jab? I've put together some helpful tips to get you feeling more comfortable with letting go of the jab and punishing your opponent when he tries to counter it. watch video >>

Two students in my children's program demonstrate a new technique. This is the first time either of them have been introduced to switches. We learned this technique as a response to back takes in a recent tournament. Competition is a great tool for learning as we can let it lead our advanced classes curriculum. watch video >>

In this video I show a pass from the Catcher Position. This is a fairly uncommon position during tournaments because it requires you to break contact from your opponent and also have enough space to squat outside their Guard. This is uncommon because in the rules it says you cant pull Guard without first making contact. If you are in an event or tournament where someone can butt flop or sit guard without contact this can be a great move and you can use it frequently. In normal IBJJF tournaments this is a great option if you break contact and must re-engage your opponent. I really like this pass and the others from that Catchers Position because it avoids a lot of the common trending moves in BJJ competitions right now, mainly the De La Riva sweeps and their variants. If you're afraid that your opponent is going to get under you or set up one of these types of guards I highly recommend this. The fact that your heels are close to your bottom and your knees are bowed out is a r watch video >>

In this video I show my primary defense/reversal in the Turtle Position. I have seen variations of this move showed many times but this differs from the way I see it most of the time as it allows you to trap the arm very securely with little to no strength and it also allows you to get your hips under the body of your partner/opponent. The first step is to control the arm. With a lot of the different setups that I've seen the trapping of the arm forecasts the move that you're going to do and they either pull their arm out or hop to the other side. By trapping the arm the way that I do in this demonstration you will almost never have to worry about someone pulling their arm out. If they do use enough strength to clear out their arm, often, they will create so much space that you can simply sit up into a guard position. After you've trapped the arm you need to straighten your inside leg. For one split second both legs will be straightened. Once you clear out your top leg you shou watch video >>
