Ryan Couture vs. K.J. Noons booked for 'Strikeforce

The competition continues to stiffen for lightweight Ryan Couture.
Couture (5-1 MMA, 5-1 SF) is set to meet onetime welterweight title challenger K.J. Noons (11-5 MMA, 3-3 SF)

The bout is likely to serve on the Showtime Extreme-televised preliminary card of the event, which takes place Jan. 12 at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City. Main-card fights, including three title bouts, air on Showtime.

Couture, the son of UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture, climbed another step on the lightweight ladder in his most recent Strikeforce appearance when he outpointed Joe Duarte at "Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Kennedy." The win followed another decision over tough veteran Conor Heun at "Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey."

Following his win over Duarte, Couture said his ultimate goal was to earn a shot at the title.

Since Strikeforce fights are so few and far between, we like to talk about them as if they just happened less than a week ago. We also like to pretend Jason High fights, but despite being undefeated in his last six bouts, the guy can't even buy a fight. You can follow him on Twitter and express your extreme disappointment that Strikeforce fails to book him for fights, or you can watch this video of Ryan Couture talking about his win over Conor Heun at Strikeforce's last event. You can also follow Jason High on Twitter and watch this video, but at some point you have to make important decisions -- and this is one of them. Fine, go ahead and do both, but we'll remember this.Sure it's unpleasant to have a fighter you sponsored be defeated via TKO and then interview the fighter that defeated your branded fighter -- but sometimes these things happen in MMA. We're cool with it. It's the ebb and flow of the sport we all love. Taoism dictates that one must not disrupt the natural order of the watch video >>

Ryan Couture didn't mind hearing that he was an underdog going into his fight with Conor Heun because it meant a win would mean that much more. Couture opened a nasty cut on Heun's face early in the fight and was able to finish him late in the third. Knowing how tough Heun is known to be, Couture was that much happier that he put him away. For most of his career, K.J. Noons has been gunning for a major title whether it was in boxing or MMA. Noons however is the first to point out his mistakes and he's had so much focus and talk about titles in the past, that it served as a distraction ahead of the fight in front of him. So for his upcoming bout with Josh Thomson in Strikeforce, while Noons admits the title is still important, he can't talk about that or worry about what's next because it all goes away if he doesn't win on Saturday night.
