A fun choke from the Turtle Position. I learned this as a blue belt and then made it my goal to get it in live rolling because I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. Sadly it took me almost 3 months to get it because our instructor yelled at us if we tried to rest in the Turtle position. The best time to use this is if your opponent tries to rest in Turtle or they actually play from the turtle position. Be careful when going for this that you do no kick your partner in the back of the head while swinging your leg around. To avoid this make sure you really stand up and disengage. Because you disengage for this move, you may be letting your opponent back into the game. It is for this reason that I do not use this move often. You may feel inclined to practice this move slowly but the momentum of this move makes it much easier. You will find that after you get the movement down it is amazingly easy. watch video >>

This video shows one of my favorite and most popular passes. I learned this pass while training in Brazil and it came in hand against the Spider Guard players that play off of their shoulders to avoid the pass. There are a couple of different options but this one leads directly to the back. This is actually a very high percentage and looks really cool. The deciding factor in success is going to be if you can get your grips while your opponent is up on his/her shoulders. If you encounter som watch video >>

In this video I show a basic Butterfly Guard Pass called Control The Ankle and Flatten Out. I learned this when I was a white belt and I still use the concepts a lot in my passing game. The idea of controlling your opponents legs with one arm by gripping the far pant leg and then flattening out will be an invaluable skill to have at the higher levels. The first, and most overlooked piece, is to bring your opponents ankles close to their butt and then to squeeze with your knees. I will almost watch video >>
