Weight-cutting has been a hot topic in the world of mixed martial arts (MMA) as of late, as there have been plenty of bouts that have been canceled due to fighters suffering complications as a result of the difficult process. More importantly than losing a bout, though, is a fighter's health, as there have been many instances in which the athlete has passed out when trying to shed the extra pounds prior to tipping the scale. Just last Sunday night (Feb. 22, 2015) T.J. Waldburger was forced out o read news >>

Despite recent weight cutting troubles, the former welterweight champion will not be working with the UFC's diet guru for his upcoming fight against "The Immortal" Matt Brown. Proper diet, nutrition, and training are hot button issues in MMA. This is a young sport and there's still a lot of experimenting going on, as to what makes for the perfect fight camp. This past weekend, TJ Waldburger's UFC Fight Night 61 welterweight bout against Wendell Oliveira fell apart at the last second when Waldburger fainted while cutting weight and smacked his head inside a Brazilian elevator. I dislike performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) for several reasons. Some of them are rational, such as the fact that they create a vicious cycle of doping and introduce yet another hazardous element to a sport that's already antithetical to physical health. Others are irrational. In short, I dislike PEDs because they're a form of cheating that doesn't take skill or craft on the fighters' part. I respect the kind of cheater who gets away with it because of his own skill, like Floyd Mayweather sneak read news >>

But he's something else, too, namely, a guy who has seen how the intersection of poor nutrition, weight cutting and performance-enhancing drug (PED) use has affected fighters and the sport.
