This one was a no-brainer for World Extreme Cagefighting officials.
“The Ultimate Fighter” Season 8 semi-finalist George Roop earned a $10,000 “Knockout of the Night” bonus after he flattened Chan Sung Jung with a sensational second-round head kick at WEC 51 “Aldo vs. Gamburyan” on Thursday at the 1stBank Center in Broomfield, Colo. Roop turned out the South Korean’s lights 1:30 into round two.
Jung -- whose popularity had enjoyed exponential growth following his three-round war with Leonard Garcia in April -- had never before been finished, much less leveled with a single strike. A former two-division Rage in the Cage champion, Roop took out the Korean Top Team ace with a left head kick that landed behind the right ear, folding him where he stood.
Meanwhile, former WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres pocketed a $10,000 “Submission of the Night” bonus after he coaxed a tapout from Charlie Valencia with a rear-naked choke 2:25 into the second round. Torres, 29, entered the match on a two-fight losing streak for the first time in his decade-long career.
Finally, Donald Cerrone and former WEC lightweight titleholder Jamie Varner banked matching $10,000 “Fight of Night” bonus after they delivered the goods in a three-round barnburner. Cerrone took a unanimous decision in an anticipated rematch between the promotion’s two fiercest rivals.
