As part of the 25th anniversary celebration of its “Just Do It” advertising campaign, Nike has released a new commercial featuring some of the world’s top athletes across many sports.
And included among those athletes in the 90-second spot is none other than UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, who signed an endorsement deal with the shoe and sports apparel giant in 2012.
The commercial, directed by the acclaimed Nicolai Fuglsig, features Oscar nominated actor Bradley Cooper (“Silver Linings Playbook,” “The Hangover” trilogy) doing voiceover and a cameo from actor Chris Pine (“Star Trek: Into Darkness”) along with its top-shelf sports stars.
Those athletes include NBA MVP LeBron James, top-ranked women’s tennis player Serena Williams, boxer Andre Ward and soccer standout Gerard Pique, plus Jones.
The commercial’s theme is a challenge to the non-pro athletes to up their game. “If you can run a mile, run a race,” Cooper says to open the commercial. “You know what? Run a marathon.”
Midway through the commercial, a school bully is shown picking a fight. “You like to fight?” Cooper asks. “Well, pick on someone your own size. Pick on someone twice your size.” And as Jones is shown delivering a spinning back kick to a heavy bag, Cooper says, “Pick on him. That’s not good.”
Jones next month defends his 205-pound title against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165 in Toronto. Ranked as the world’s fighter in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie.com MMA pound-for-pound rankings since Anderson Silva’s loss to Chris Weidman, Jones goes after what would be a record-breaking sixth straight successful title defense against the Swede.
