“Jacare “Has stopped five straight opponents, four of them in the first round. The first three came to close out his career in Strikeforce, where the Brazilian went 7-1. Then he moved to the UFC and has back-to-back stoppage wins.
Next up, Souza (19-3 MMA, 2-0 UFC) has another stiff test on the table in the form of Francis Carmont (22-7 MMA, 6-0 UFC). The two meet Saturday in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 36, which takes place Saturday at Arena Jaragua in Jaragua do Sul, Santa Catarina, Brazil.
Souza is ranked No. 4, while Rivera is No. 9 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA middleweight rankings. “Jacare” also has climbed to the No. 15 spot in the pound-for-pound rankings.
In his UFC debut, Souza was supposed to fight Constantinos Philippou at UFC on FX 8 in his native Brazil. But an eye injury took Philippou out of the fight. Chris Camozzi moved up the card on short notice for the fight – and Souza took him out in short order.
Check out the video of Souza’s arm-triangle choke victory from this past May. Then don’t miss as he goes after six in a row, and three straight to start his UFC career. His fight against Carmont airs Saturday on FOX Sports 1.
