SAN JOSE, Calif. – It was a weird night for Matt Brown.
The UFC on FOX 12 headliner missed weight on his first attempt on Friday. He planned on using what he thought would be two hours to make 171 pounds after coming in at 172.5 on his first try.
But then the California State Athletic Commission said he couldn’t weigh in again and would be fined 20 percent, with 10 percent going to opponent Robbie Lawler and 10 percent going to the CSAC.
But his boss, UFC President Dana White, came to the rescue and argued against the CSAC that if Brown was willing to make weight, but was suddenly told he wouldn’t get a second try – even though Juliana Lima was given a second chance earlier on the weigh-in proceedings – he shouldn’t be fine.
The CSAC agreed, in essence agreeing that its rules are perhaps a little messed up, or at least that its own interpretation of them is a little messed up and inconsistent.
So Brown (and Lima) missed weight – but avoided a monetary fine.
