Video: Inside the vintage Urijah Faber-Dominick Cruz rivalry on 'STATIC'

The latest edition of “STATIC” now is available, and it features a look at the rivalry between former UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz and former WEC featherweight champ Urijah Faber.

The pair’s rivalry started more than seven years ago at WEC 26, when Cruz made his promotional debut to challenge for Faber’s 145-pound title.

When all the fighters were asked to autograph a stack of event posters for the show, Cruz found himself in an interesting position. Despite being in the main event, in a title fight, his image was nowhere to be found on the poster.

So he signed his name over Faber’s face. On more than 100 posters. That didn’t sit well with Faber, and the rivalry was born.

Faber choked Cruz out that fight in 98 seconds, but when the two moved to the UFC, Cruz got his revenge more than four years later when he took a unanimous decision from his in-state rival to retain his bantamweight title.

The two were scheduled to meet in the rubber match after coaching opposite each other on Season 15 of “The Ultimate Fighter.” But a knee injury has kept Cruz out of action since then.

There’s almost no doubt the two eventually will meet one more time to settle the score. But until then, even with Cruz out of action for coming up on three years, there’s no shortage of tension between the two.

Faber, Cruz, Chael Sonnen and those closest to the fighters weigh in on the rivalry in the latest edition of the web series.

“STATIC” launched earlier this month with a debut episode featuring the Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen rivalry. The second edition went inside Diaz’s rivalry with Jason “Mayhem” Miller. And this past week, the Ronda Rousey-Miesha Tate rivalry was investigated. The show is part of JAY Z’s Life + Times, a digital hub covering art, sports, music, fashion and culture.
