At this past weekend’s UFC Fight Night 48 event in Macau, UFC President Dana White took the odd step of relieving a judge of his duties mid-event.
Judge Howard Hughes was a common denominator in a pair of oddly-scored split decisions to start the night, and White decided he was going to take a stand, instructing officials to allow Hughes to “grab some beer and some popcorn” and watch from a fan’s point of view for the rest of the night.
Some fans actually applauded the move. After all, judging is often one of the biggest problems facing the sport. But while White’s intentions may have been noble, Ben Fowlkes points out a few reasons for concern if the UFC boss continues to make similar moves down the line.
