Promotion officials announced the news via Twitter shortly after the media conference call during which White initially suggested that the Sept. 1 label would be transferred to the Canadian event three weeks later. UFC 151’s cancellation came about as a result of headlining light heavyweight title challenger Dan Henderson partially tearing his MCL. Champion Jon Jones was then offered a fight with Chael Sonnen, which he turned down.
As it now stands, UFC 152 will be headlined by a new light heavyweight championship affair pitting Jones against Lyoto Machida in a rematch of their UFC 140 clash this past December. The show, which takes place at the Air Canada Centre and airs live on pay-per-view, will also see a flyweight champion crowned for the first time in the promotion’s history, as Demetrious Johnson squares off with Joseph Benavidez.
