UFC rankings: Nate Diaz removed from official list of top 15 lightweights

Joining him in rankings purgatory is T.J. Grant.

Well ... this is interesting.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight slugger Nate Diaz was ranked as high as No. 6 in the "official" UFC rankings (see them here), published back on April 28, 2014, in the wake of the UFC 172 pay-per-view (PPV) event in Baltimore, Maryland.

What a difference a week makes.

Despite the fact that no UFC event was held last weekend -- the typical precursor to an update in rankings -- Diaz (17-9) has mysteriously vanished from the list of top 15 lightweights. So too, has T.J. Grant, who hasn't seen action for nearly a year due to a lingering concussion.

Take a look:

Lightweight
Champion: Anthony Pettis
1. Gilbert Melendez
2. Benson Henderson
3. Josh Thomson +1
4. Khabib Nurmagomedov +1
5. Donald Cerrone +2
6. Rafael dos Anjos +2
7. Jim Miller +2
8. Gray Maynard +2
9. Myles Jury +2
10. Michael Johnson +2
11. Edson Barboza +2
12. Bobby Green +2
13. Rustam Khabilov +2
14. Jorge Masvidal *NR
15. Joe Lauzon *NR

+/- = movement in rankings, *NR = Not previously ranked.

Ironically, both men are coming off technical knockout victories over Gray Maynard, who moves up two spots to No. 8 in their absence. While most mixed martial arts (MMA) fans are likely to understand why Grant is no longer eligible, the exclusion of Diaz will probably raise a few eyebrows.

Because of stuff like this.

The promotion may have opted to remove him since Diaz has not competed for nearly six months, for a variety of reasons, and currently has no fight lined up. No official explanation was given, but I'm sure we'll be hearing from Diaz -- who likes to air his dirty laundry on Twitter -- sooner, rather than later.

Stay tuned.

UFC women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey is No. 9 in the UFC's official pound-for-pound rankings, but apparently that isn't good enough for her head coach, Edmond Tarverdyan. Speaking as a guest on Ariel Helwani's The MMA Hour last week (h/t MMA Fighting), Tarverdyan made the bold proclamation that the "Rowdy" one has proved she deserves to be ranked in elite territory with any male counterpart: "Top three, for sure. Nate Diaz took a shot at a certain cowboy for 'sucking too much UFC d***'.
He hardly uses social media as much as other fighters, but it's always interesting when Nate Diaz bitches rants on twitter. This time, the blunt of it is targeted at his former opponent in Donald Cerrone, who fights tomorrow against Jim Miller at UFC Fight Night: Atlantic City. Here's what Diaz had to say: Some people just suck way too much #UFCdick ... An they where cowboy hats

The UFC president responds to prodigal Lightweight Nate Diaz' recent tweets bashing Cowboy Cerrone in predictable fashion.
Well this was predictable.
UFC president Dana White apparently heard about Nate Diaz' tweet this week bashing Donald Cerrone and has his usual pithy response.
First some background. Cerrone is headlining tonight's UFC Fight Night Atlantic City against Jim Miller. Diaz is holding out for higher pay from the UFC.
With that out of the way, here's Dana's quote from UFC.com: "Nat more

"Nate Diaz is not a needle mover," UFC President Dana White told reporters in Dublin on Friday when asked if Zuffa CEO Lorenzo Fertitta has attempted to mend fences between the two sides.

This is starting to get ugly. Well, uglier.
Mike Kogan was not impressed by the comments from Dana White.
Nate Diaz's manager came to the defense of his client (via Twitter) after the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) president declared that Nate was not a "needle mover" like his older brother, Nick Diaz.
Kogan begs to differ, and he offered up a few cold, hard facts to the leader of the world's largest mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion to prove his theory wrong. 4.4 mil 3rd highest, 2.4mil more
