UFC on Versus 5 Prelim Results: Hamman, Benavidez, Herman and Markes All Victorious

The last four preliminary fights at UFC on Versus 5: Hardy vs. Lytle had nothing but action to offer UFC and mixed martial arts fans. With two of the four fights being finishes, it’s clear that the Fight of the Night award is not easily decided.

C.B. Dollaway vs. Jared Hamman

Jared Hamman was successful in his middleweight debut, defeating C.B. Dollaway by technical knockout in the second round. Hamman pressured his opponent and pounded him out with a stoppage at 3:38 of the second frame.

Hamman worked well on the feet, showing clean striking before Dollaway took him down halfway through the first round. Dollaway pressured with an arm triangle, but Hamman worked some impressive defense, getting out of the hold and returning to the feet a short while later. Hamman then put his opponent oh his back and got full mount, but Dollaway scrambled back to the feet and landed some punches that rocked his opponent. The round ended and the crowd was excited with the action between these two middleweights.

Hamman pushed the pace Dollaway in the second round and unloaded a series of punches that backed up the wrestler. Dollaway dropped levels and Hamman continued to push forward, bringing the fight to the ground. From there, Hamman stayed in top-position and continued with punches in bunches. Referee Herb Dean was forced to stop the fight in the second stanza.

“I got the greatest coaches in the world, man,” Hamman said after his impressive showing. “These guys believed in me… so I [have to] give it all to them.”

Joseph Benavidez vs. Eddie Wineland

Joseph Benavidez won a unanimous decision over Eddie Wineland in a prelim fight that was more than worthy of being on a main card.. The bantamweight clash had Benavidez out-pointing his opponent on the feet en route to a 30-27 decision across the judges panel.

Wineland’s footwork looked clean in the first round, but Benavidez landed a few shots in a scramble that looked as though they broke his opponent’s nose. Blood began to pour from Wineland’s nostrils and they stayed that way until the end of the round.

Round two showed Wineland turning it up a little to begin, but Benavidez remained with the advantage on the feet. A few take-down attempts by Benavidez were stuffed until the last 20 seconds when the Team Alpha Male fighter finally brought Wineland down to the canvas.

Benavidez kept the pressure on the final round and stuck Wineland with a stiff punch that sent him pedaling back. From there, Benavidez threw a flying knee that looked as acrobatic as it could get. The attempt didn’t bring down his opponent, but more set a tone for the stand-up and how Benavidez was in charge of it.

Benavidez won a fight while keeping the fight standing, which was thought to be an advantage for Wineland.

“I definitely thought I could exploit him more on the ground,” Benavidez said after pulling out the decision. “But he has great take-down defense… I think I can stand with anyone in the division.”

Ed Herman vs. Kyle Noke

Ed Herman submitted Kyle Noke in the first round of their prelim bout. The ground work proved to be his key as he locked in a heel hook at 4:15 of the opening round.

Herman worked some impressive ground work in the first round, transitioning from position to position with several submission attempts. Noke tried to get out of a heel hook, but Herman held it and tapped the Austrailian mixed martial artist in the opening frame.

“He was fighting real hard down there,” Herman said after the submission finish. “But I got it, baby.”

Karlos Vemola vs. Ronny Markes

Ronny Markes defeated Karlos Vemola by unanimous decision in their preliminary battle. The young Brazilian won with scores of 30-27 across the board.

Markes put the pressure on in the first round and took Vemola down repeatedly, controlling the Czech wrestler for a majority of the opening five minutes. The second round had more of the same from Markes, although the pace slowed due to both fighters being fatigued. Markes worked Vemola to the ground again in the third and pulled out the win in his UFC debut.
