The Ultimate Fighting Championship recently announced a new television deal with Fox. UFC president Dana White relayed that he saw the deal as not just the culmination of many years of work, but also as “just the beginning” of taking mixed martial arts, and his particular brand of it, into the consciousness of mainstream America.
Promising a championship caliber main event for his promotion’s broadcast network debut on Nov. 12 on Fox, White on Friday delivered not a championship caliber, but a true championship fight pitting current heavyweight titleholder Cain Velasquez, the world’s No. 1 ranked heavyweight fighter, against No. 1 contender Junior dos Santos in a battle for the belt.
The UFC called a special media conference call on Friday to make the announcement and answer questions about their decision.
