UFC on FX 6 Results: Team Australia’s Robert Whittaker Scores TUF Smashes Welterweight Title

Brad Scott won two close decision to earn his way into the TUF: Smashes welterweight final at Saturday’s UFC on FX 6 in Australia. His opponent, Robert Whittaker, earned his berth with back-to-back knockouts. (The event took place on Friday in the U.S. due to the time difference.)

Neither would repeat in the finale at the Gold Coast Exhibition and Convention Centre in Queensland, Australia.

Whittaker came out and quickly established himself as the more technical of the two, using excellent timing and technique to counter Scott’s more brawler-like approach. He did a good job establishing the jab, snapping Scott’s head back and landing several more blows to each of Scott’s.

But just when it appeared that Whittaker might start to run away with the fight, Scott dug deep and exposed his fighter’s heart.

He continually pressed Whittaker into the fence, trying to take away his range, pummeling him with short shots to the body and exchanging knees to the thighs and body. Scott pressed Whittaker hard throughout the round, shoving him to the mat at one point and taking his back, dropping down a barrage of punches.

Whittaker finished the second stanza looking awfully tired and continually shaking out his right foot as if there were something wrong with it.

He stormed into the final stanza, however, answering with three or four part combinations to every one of Scott’s blows.

Whittaker was the aggressor in round three, pushing the fight more than he did in the two opening rounds, and finally mixing in some lethal elbow strikes that cut Scott open on the forehead.

Whittaker was relentless in the final round, trying to put a stamp on the fight.

“The second round could have gone either way,” said Whittaker after the fight. “It was the last round and I didn’t want to see it to a fourth. I just wanted to seal that third round and make sure they know who won it.”

And win it he did, earning the nod from the judges, making Robert Whittaker the unanimous choice in front of a highly supportive Aussie crowd as the TUF: Smashes welterweight winner.

“The real joy was defending my country and making everybody proud.”
