UFC on FX 5 Fight Card
Sherdog.com will report the Target Center in Minneapolis at approximately 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT with play-by-play and live results of UFC on FX 5, which is headlined by a heavyweight duel pitting Travis Browne against Antonio Silva.

Round 1Uyenoyama takes the center of the cage and walks Harris toward the fence, both men feeling out the distance with wide punches. Uyenoyama changes levels, gets an underhook and shoves Harris against the cage, where the flyweights jockey for position in the clinch. Harris gets a takedown, but Uyenoyama quickly stands and Harris takes his back on the feet. Harris drives some knees into the back of Uyenoyama’s thighs while the American tries to get Harris off his back. As he’s losing poition, Harris drags Uyenoyama down to the ground again, where Uyenoyama ties up Harris’ right arm in open guard. Uyenoyama grabs hold of Harris’ right arm now and puts his left leg behind Harris’ head, looking for a triangle. He can’t cinch the choke and Harris escapes to the feet. Uyenoyama tries a wild somersault kick that doesn’t land flush. Harris lands a few short left hooks and leg kicks; Uyenoyama raises his hands high in a taunting style reminiscent of recent training partners the Diaz brothers before the round ends.

Round 2
Some more busy-but-tentative swinging on the feet precedes another
clinch against the cage with Uyenoyama on the outside. This time
it’s Uyenoyama who brings the fight to the ground, and he works to
secure Harris’ back once they’re down there. Harris defends and
puts Uyenoyama in his guard, but Uyenoyama is relentless and moves
quickly into mount. Punches from mount force Harris to roll over
and Uyenoyama wastes no time in locking up a rear-naked choke.
Harris taps out and referee Nick Gamst officially calls it at 3:38
of round two.
Nunes lands an outside leg kick and some hard right hands up top. Palaszewski reels backwards and Nunes gives chase. Nunes grabs hold of Palaszewski, who grabs the Brazilian’s head in a guillotine under his left arm as he falls to the ground. Nunes extracts his head from the grip of Palaszewski, who is leaking blood out the corner of his left eye from those early punches. Palaszewski works for a triangle from his back, but Nunes does well to stack up and get out of danger. Resting in Palaszewski’s closed guard, Nunes stacks “Bartimus” up, then goes back to the kneeling position to drill Palaszewski with elbows. Palaszewski escapes to his feet, but he’s only vertical for a few seconds before he’s crushed with another vicious right hand from “The Gun.” Palaszewski dives on Nunes’ legs and Nunes sprawls, then spins around to take his man’s back. Palaszewski flips over and puts Nunes in his open guard, so Nunes stands up and dives at Palaszewski with more punches.

Round 2
Nunes comes out swinging punches and leg kicks, and even tries a
spinning hook kick early in the second. He keeps pestering
Palaszewski with leg kicks, then thumps him with another right hand
and a spinning backfist. Palaszewski digs an underhook but gets
tripped to the ground and finds himself underneath Nunes again.
Palaszewski is quicker to his feet this time, though he nearly gets
snared in a guillotine on his way up. Nunes keeps the pressure on
with leg kicks and more right hands; Palaszewski gives him some low
kicks in return but just can’t connect with a big punch. Nunes
catches a kick and puts Palaszewski on the ground one more time
before the end of the round.

Round 3
It’s more of the same from Nunes early in the final round, but 30
seconds in, Palaszewski puts a left hand on Nunes that gives the
Brazilian pause for thought. Moments later, a counter left hook
clips Nunes’ chin. Nunes is on rubbery legs, moving backward as
Palaszewski tries to pour on the punishment with punches and kicks.
Nunes clinches, gets shoved away and keeps moving backward. He
seems to have recovered as he resumes inside-leg-kicking
Palaszewski, whose offense has slowed back down. Palaszewski comes
forward with a pair of outside leg kicks and another short left. A
kick to the body from Palaszewski and the featherweights trade
punches in close quarters. Down to the final two minutes now and
Nunes in headhunting, swinging at air with big, overhand punches.
Palaszewski backs him off with pawing punches, but Nunes clinches
and looks for a takedown. Palaszewski shoves him away, eats a pair
of hooks and dodges a spinning kick. Palaszewski walks into a hard
right hand, then another one that sends him to the floor. Nunes
pounces and tries to finish the fight with punches on the floor but
runs out of time.

Round 1Volkmann throws some awkward body kicks, then tries to go up top as the wrestlers feel one another out. Volkmann is first to dive for a single-leg about 50 seconds in, but Roller denies it. An uppercut scores for Volkmann, and he grabs for another takedown attempt. This time, the single-leg turns into a waistlock and Volkmann has Roller’s back standing. Roller goes to his knees and Volkmann locks on a body triangle, softening Roller up with punches. Volkmann nearly has the RNC with his left arm, but Roller peels it off. Volkmann switches to a facelock/neck crank with his right arm; Roller hesitate for a moment, then taps out at 2:38 of the opening round. Round 1
LeVesseur swings a wild left hand which Prater ducks and uses to clinch up. Prater puts his man against the fence with underhooks and works a few knees inside; one strike strays low, but the lightweights keep fighting. LeVesseur trips Prater to the floor, but they’re only there a few seconds before ref Josh Rosenthal orders them back up. Prater ducks another punch, ties up and tries for a trip of his own. He jumps guard and LeVesseur presses him into the fence. His legs wrapped around LeVesseur’s waist, Prater grabs for a guillotine with his left arm. After 30 seconds of threatening with the choke, Prater drops down to his feet and lets go, but LeVesseur keeps him pinned on the fence. Prater turns him around and takes a knee to the body, then another as LeVesseur regains outside position. They trade knees inside and Prater sneaks a few short right hands around the back of LeVesseur’s head. LeVesseur throws a couple shots to the body before the horn.

Round 2
Prater takes the outside position on the fence this time, bullying
LeVesseur against the cage with knees. LeVesseur turns it around
and scores with some knees of his own before they split. Prater
changes levels and dodges a lead uppercut to grab for a leg. He
can’t get it, so Prater changes to the Thai plum and puts LeVesseur
on the fence again. LeVesseur takes the outside position and
finally gets Prater to the ground, though the BJJ specialist may
have willingly pulled guard to set up a guillotine attempt.
LeVesseur signals that he’s alright, even as Prater continues to
wrench the choke. LeVesseur gets his head free and lets Prater back
up. LeVesseur charges in for another takedown in the closing
seconds and Prater grabs for a D’Arce/brabo choke this time.
LeVesseur rides out the final few seconds on top.

Round 3
The lightweights exchange kicks before once again clinching and
going to work against the fence. LeVesseur scores with an uppercut,
his most significant offense of the bout and a punch which makes
Prater scoot away momentarily. They’re soon back to clinching with
LeVesseur on the outside and Prater throwing knees with his back on
the fence. They get off the fence finally, but continue clinch.
LeVesseur hits a takedown and Prater tries another guillotine which
doesn’t stick. One more guillotine attempt from Prater before the
end and LeVesseur once again gives a thumbs up.

Round 1Simpson is leading with uppercuts, twitching his lead leg and feinting kicks. Pierce tosses Simpson to the ground, but he’s quickly back up and Pierce shoves him into the cage with double underhooks. Pierce works some knees inside while Simpson tries to punch the head and body in close quarters. They break off and Pierce begins chasing Simpson, but Simpson drops him with a short right hand. Pierce clings on to Simpson’s right leg, but Simpson just hops backward on his left leg and continues punching Pierce in the face. Pierce puts Simpson’s back on the fence again. Simpson finally frees his leg, drills Pierce with another uppercut and a stiff knee. Big double-leg slam takedown from Simpson puts Pierce on the ground again. Simpson takes his back and tries a modified rear-naked choke, but Pierce rolls over and survives to hear the horn.

Round 2
Simpson clips Pierce with another lead uppercut early. The pair
ties up briefly but nothing comes of it. Front kick to the body by
Simpson, who then tries to go over the top with a big right hand.
Pierce counters it perfectly with a short right hand on the jaw
that sends Simpson slumping to the canvas. Another couple punches
from Pierce turn out Simpson’s lights and ref Daryl Guthmiller
steps in to rescue the fallen Arizonan. Mike Pierce scores the
come-from-behind knockout at 29 seconds of round two.
After some early leg kicks are exchanged, Castillo crushes Johnson with a big right hand and Johnson falls to his right side near the fence. Castillo pounces and tries to pound him out with short hammerfists from half-guard, then side control. He hops into mount and locks up an arm-triangle choke, then steps over to Johnson’s right side. The choke looks deep but Johnson is able to withstand it even flat on his back. Castillo goes back to mount and releases the hold, then gets off a few punches before being bumped off by Johnson. Working from half-guard on Johnson’s left side, Castillo presses Johnson into the cage as they scoot around the outside. Castillo stays on top for the remainder of the round, posturing up and throwing occasional right hands while Johnson tries to stay tight and defend.

Round 2
Johnson begins stringing together some kicks to the legs and body
of Castillo, who shoots low on a leg but abandons the attempt just
as quickly. Castillo’s inside low kick is countered by a short left
that sends him stumbling backward and to the ground. Johnson
crashes down with a barrage of right hands, knocking Castillo out
cold and forcing referee Josh Rosenthal into action. The end comes
officially 66 seconds into round two.
Edwards comes out aggressive, swinging punches and forcing Neer back into the fence. Neer reverses on the cage and Edwards jumps guard with a high, arm-in guillotine. The choke is deep and Neer appears to go to sleep just as he slumps forward onto his knees. Referee Nick Gamst notices that Neer is limp and pushes Edwards off. “Fast Eddy” lives up to his name with a 45-second technical submission victory. Round 1
The flyweights spend the first minute circling, with Dodson in the southpaw stance, pawing some punches at Formiga’s body and a couple upstairs. Dodson misses with a one-two up top and Formiga can’t connect with a counter as he tries to come up the middle. Dodson gets in and out with a left, then smiles after taking a right from the Brazilian. A fake uppercut from Dodson backs Formiga out just as he wades into range. A long right-handed counter grazes Dodson’s face. Dodson gets off a good shot to the breadbasket but neither man has taken control of this round through three minutes. Formiga goes after Dodson’s legs on a shot and gets shucked off. Another shot and Formiga is again stood up.

Round 2
Boos rain down after another opening minute of sparse offense, with
Dodson racking up leg kicks and staying on the outside of his
larger opponent. Dodson dips in with the occasional left hook or
uppercut, and Formiga shoots for another takedown but again comes
up empty. Dodson catches Formiga with a hard left to the chin and
the Brazilian falls to the canvas. Follow-up lefts from Dodson rain
down but Formiga turtles and gets back to his feet. With 30 seconds
to go, another blistering left hand puts Formiga down again.
Formiga is flat on his stomach this time with Dodson on his back,
pounding him out with. Formiga isn’t offering anything in return
and referee Daryl Guthmiller is forced to intervene. With a TKO win
at 4:35 of round two, John Dodson becomes the UFC’s new No. 1
flyweight contender.
Both men swing hard punches in the opening minute, though neither finds their target. Hieron scores with a few outside leg kicks, misses with a spinning side-kick and sticks a long jab in Ellenberger’s face. After missing with some power shots, Ellenberger finally gets through with a short uppercut on the chin of Hieron and a follow-up hook. Hieron shakes it off and keeps moving, now halfway through the round. Hieron gets deep on a single-leg, but Ellenberger leaps into the air to avoid the takedown and strikes Hieron with a knee on the way out. The action slows again down the stretch with neither man coming up with anything big in the last minute.

Round 2
The welterweights each connect with decent left-handed counters
early in round two. Hieron gets his kicks going to the legs and
body, then goes upstairs twice and has kicks absorbed by
Ellenberger’s forearm. Ellenberger catches Hieron coming in, grabs
a high double-leg and powers Hieron to the floor. Ellenberger
elbows and grinds with forearms in Hieron’s closed guard, and
Hieron is quickly cut along the bridge of his nose. Hieron creates
some space and scrambles up, then gets back to kicking and moving
around the perimeter. Hieron misses with a spinning backfist. He
dodges a high kick from Ellenberger and does a saucy
shoulder-shake.

Round 3
Ellenberger sets up on the outside but he takes a kick to the cup
in the opening minute and needs a break to recover. When they
resume, he drags Hieron down with another double-leg, but Hieron is
quickly back to his feet. Hieron staying busier now, keeping active
with kicks, but still not doing any big damage. Ellenberger, for
his part, just walks Hieron down, sporadically sticking a jab or
swinging a hook. Ellenberger chases Hieron with a single-leg,
doesn’t get it and settles for a left in the clinch. Ellenberger
blitzes just before the horn and Hieron hits the ground, but it
appears to have been a slip as he hops right back up.

Round 1Referee Herb Dean is the third man in the cage for tonight’s heavyweight main event. Browne stays on the outside early, showing some footwork and feinting kicks at the Brazilian’s knees. Silva goes to Browne’s legs with kicks and even throws one up the middle which misses. Silva comes inside to clinch and takes a knee to the gut as he pushes Browne against a cage-post. Browne loops his arm over the top of the Octagon to avoid a takedown and is verbally admonished by the ref. Browne throws a knee as he exits the clinch but can’t find Silva’s head. Browne throws a punch and his left leg buckles beneath him. He hops back up but he’s clearly favoring his left leg as he tries to bounce. Silva throws a kick at the injured leg, then comes in and topples Browne with a huge right hand against the fence. Browne hits the deck and Silva blasts him with a few more punches before ref Dean has seen enough. Browne tries to get back up immediately after the stoppage but falls back to the ground. Antonio Silva gets his first UFC victory by TKO at 3:27 of the first round. view original article >>
