Thiago Alves vs. Martin Kampmann

Round 1: Alves opens up going straight at Kampmann with his boxing combinations. Kampmann shoots for a single-leg, but Alves maintains his balance and punches him repeatedly, but Kampmann doesn’t give up and gets Alves to his knees. Alves won’t go all the way downa dn quickly returns to his feet, but Kampmann rocks him with a kick and follows up with knees, driving Alves backwards and to the mat. Alves gets up and eats another knee, but the Pitbull is doggedly coming at the Dane. They clinch up and Alves plans Kampmann on his back, landing in his full guard. Alves quickly passes to side control, but Kampmann works feverishly to regain his half guard. Alves, however, moves up to full mount and flattens his weight out on top of Kampmann, punching him and periodically dropping elbows. Kampmann escapes just before the horn. MMAWeekly.com scores round one 10-9 for Kampmann.

Round 2: Alves starts punching right away, much how he did in the opening round. Kampmann, however, is now moving in on Alves as well, trying to get close and take away his power shots. Alves lands a left hook that snaps Kampmann’s jaw to the side. Kampmann is trying to find a home for his strikes, but Alves is doing a good job avoiding most of them, and lands an uppercut. Kampmann shoots, but can’t score the takedown. Alves isn’t doing anything fancy at this point, but he is consistently sneaking in two and three-punch combinations. And then sneaks in a big straight right that rocks Kampmann, who has become a little more gun-shy now. Alves scores again with a left hook-right cross, but eats a knee to the chin in return. Kampmann presses Alves to the cage for the final moments of the round. MMAWeekly.com scores round two 10-9 for Alves.

Round 3: Same strategy from Alves, working his punches. He drops for a takedown, but doesn’t get it and ends up clinched along the fence briefly. Kampmann digs deep and moves forward on Alves in a flurry of punches and knees, backing him into the cage. Alves gets away from the cage and goes back to landing his boxing combinations. He lands a solid leg kick before Kampmann lands a jumping knee. But Alves fires back with a good punch-low kick combination, and then follows that with a few more punches. Kampmann is still moving forward, but without much firepower coming and eats another overhand right from Alves. Kampmann shoots, but Alves shucks it off easily. A minute and a half left in the fight and the action kind of stalls out a bit, but then Alves rocks Kampmann with a big right hand. He shoots, but Kampmann sinks in a guillotine choke on the way down, turns Alves to his back, and forces him to tap out.
